The EOB Tells You More Than Whether You Got Paid

Most practices file claims and wait. But the Explanation of Benefits — from both the payer and patient — is a goldmine of information if you know how to read it.

What to look for beyond the payment amount:

• - Adjustment codes: Why was payment reduced? Contractual? Coordination of benefits?
• - Remark codes: Is the payer asking for more info?
• - Patient responsibility: Is the balance correct based on your fee schedule and contract?
• - Coordination of benefits flags: Is a secondary payer supposed to pick this up?

A practice that reviews EOBs systematically catches errors that silent posting misses.
